CSTO: Armenia's partnership remains vital despite temporary suspension

06 March 2025 12:18

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) continues to maintain working contacts with Armenia, with the organisation's obligations towards the country remaining intact.

In an interview with Russian media, CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov confirmed that Armenia remains an ally, Caliber.Az reports.

"We maintain working contacts with Yerevan. I would like to emphasise again that the Republic of Armenia remains a partner, and the organisation’s commitments towards the country remain unchanged. As for signals of readiness to resume cooperation with the CSTO, the format of relations has not changed and remains the same," Tasmagambetov said.

Note that, Armenia suspended its participation in the CSTO in February 2024 due to the bloc's failure to support Armenia during critical moments in 2021 and 2022. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan expressed his discontent, stating, "The Collective Security Treaty has not fulfilled its objectives as far as Armenia is concerned," adding that the country "could not let that happen without taking notice."

Armenia has now effectively "frozen" its participation in the treaty but clarified that there were no plans to close the Russian military base in the country for the time being.
