Cuba unrest: Protesters set fire to party building, state facilities
A group of protesters in the city of Morón attacked the local branch building of the Communist Party of Cuba.
According to the newspaper Invasor, the incident occurred after a rally sparked by residents’ dissatisfaction with power outages and problems accessing food supplies.
Participants threw stones at the entrance of the building, removed furniture from the reception area and set it on fire outside. A state pharmacy and a grocery store were also targeted in the attack.
Miguel Díaz‑Canel, the president of Cuba, acknowledged the protesters’ complaints and demands as legitimate in a post on X (formerly Twitter), noting that their desperation over blackouts was “understandable.”
At the same time, he warned that “the authorities will not allow violence and vandalism that threaten the peace of citizens.”
