Czech politician warns US-Israel attack on Iran could destabilize Middle East
Czech SPD leader and member of the House of Representatives, Tomio Okamura, has warned that the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran could increase the risk of destabilisation in the Middle East, potentially triggering mass migration or an energy crisis.
Speaking to reporters ahead of a coalition council meeting, Okamura emphasised that while he rejects the actions of the Iranian regime, this does not exempt other states from respecting international law and the UN Charter, Radio Prague International reports.
He noted that, under the UN Charter, states are obliged to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any country. Okamura stressed that finding a diplomatic solution should be the priority and cautioned that the ongoing conflict could have significant effects on fuel prices.
The United States and Israel launched a series of strikes on Iranian targets on Febryuary 28. Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Israel and US military bases across the region, including in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, and Jordan.
Okamura also criticised a statement issued by European Union member states on March 1, which called for maximum restraint and full respect for international law in relation to the Iranian conflict. He described the EU declaration as ineffective and lacking concrete measures to resolve the crisis, suggesting it reflected a sense of desperation.
