Defence minister hails Türkiye's F-16 jets deal with US

12 August 2024 16:22

Türkiye and the United States have reached an agreement under which the republic received US F-16 Block-70 fighter jets, as well as modernisation kits for existing aircraft.

Türkiye is satisfied with its ongoing deal with the United States for the procurement of Block-70 F-16 fighter jets and modernization kits, Defence Minister Yashar Guler said as he sat for an interview with foreign media, Caliber.Az reports.

He confirmed that the process is proceeding as scheduled.

“We hope the project will be completed smoothly until the final jet is delivered,” Guler stated, highlighting that discussions between officials from the two NATO allies are still ongoing to finalize the details.

While Türkiye is looking to enhance its relations with the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), Guler emphasized that the nation’s primary focus remains fulfilling its NATO obligations. “Our priority is to meet our responsibilities to NATO as a key ally and to strengthen solidarity with our partners. Our aim should be to ensure that NATO remains prepared, resolute, and robust.”

The SCO, established in 2001 by Russia, China, and Central Asian states, serves as a strategic counterbalance to Western alliances.

F-16 Block 70 aircraft are the latest variant of the widely-used F-16 Fighting Falcon. This model, also known as the F-16V, features advanced avionics, radar systems, and weaponry compared to earlier versions. The Block 70 variant is equipped with the APG-83 SABR radar, which provides superior targeting and tracking capabilities, and includes a state-of-the-art electronic warfare suite.

With the purchase of F-16 Block 70 fighter jets, Türkiye is set to enhance its air force capabilities, a significant step in its military modernization efforts.
