Defence minister: Moldova to retire Kalashnikovs in major NATO upgrade
Moldova’s armed forces are set to gradually retire Kalashnikov assault rifles as part of a broader effort to align with NATO weapons standards, Defence Minister Anatolie Nosatyi announced.
Nosatyi emphasized that the transition to NATO-caliber weapons will not only modernize Moldova’s arsenal but also provide access to a comprehensive logistics network, including ammunition and spare parts, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“We will fully switch to weapons used in the West, to NATO-caliber arms, which will give us access to a logistical base, ammunition, and spare parts. We are doing this gradually. Four to five units have already phased out Kalashnikov rifles, including the General Staff Regiment and the Military Academy,” Nosatyi said during an interview on Radio Moldova 1.
The minister highlighted that the process will be implemented step by step, with the aim of modernizing Moldova’s military capabilities and enhancing interoperability with NATO forces. The phased approach ensures a smooth transition while maintaining operational readiness across the armed forces.
