Dozens dead in mass brawl at football match in Guinea VIDEO
A mass brawl broke out among football fans at a match in N'Zérékoré, in southeastern Guinea, resulting in the deaths of dozens of people.
The incident was triggered by controversial decisions made by the referee, who showed a red card and then awarded a penalty kick to one of the teams, prompting fans to start fighting, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
Police used tear gas to disperse the crowd. In a frantic attempt to escape, fans rushed to flee the stadium, causing stampedes at the exits. Many people died from suffocation or falls from the stadium walls while trying to get outside. The difficulty in identifying the bodies has made it challenging to determine the exact death toll.
"There are about 100 dead. Some are lying on the floor in the corridors. The morgue is overcrowded," a medical worker said.
The exact number of victims is still being confirmed, but it is known that the tragedy has become one of the deadliest in the history of sporting events in the region. The country's authorities have pledged to conduct a thorough investigation and take measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
