A Kuwaiti oil tanker came under a drone attack in waters near Dubai on Tuesday, March 31, triggering a fire on board and raising concerns about a potential oil spill, according to official statements and international monitoring agencies.
Dubai authorities confirmed that emergency crews successfully extinguished the fire aboard the vessel. The government also stated that all 24 crew members were unharmed and safe, as per CNN report.
The tanker, identified by the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation as the very large crude carrier “Al-Salmi,” was reportedly anchored off the coast of Dubai at the time of the incident. According to Kuwait’s state news agency KUNA, the company said the vessel had been targeted by Iranian forces using a drone.
The Caspian Pipeline Consortium indicated that the tanker was fully loaded, warning that the incident could have resulted in an oil spill, though no such spill has been confirmed.
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, a British military monitoring body responsible for the region, reported that the vessel was struck approximately 31 nautical miles northwest of Dubai.
Authorities in Dubai said technical teams are continuing to assess the extent of the damage and evaluate the overall situation following the attack.
