Eight burnt alive in Bangladesh hotel fire

06 August 2024 10:48

At least eight people were burned to death and 84 others were injured after unidentified arsonists set fire to a residential hotel in Jessore on August 5.

The hotel, owned by Shahin Chakladar, the general secretary of the Jessore district Awami League, became the scene of a tragic incident as confirmed by Deputy Commissioner Abrarul Islam, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The victims included Chayan, 20, and Sejan Hossain, 19, who were identified among the deceased. Harun-or-Rashid, a staff member at Jashore General Hospital, reported that at least 84 individuals, primarily students, were receiving treatment for injuries sustained in the fire.

The incident occurred amidst widespread celebrations following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Thousands of people were gathered at various points in the town to mark the political change. During these celebrations, some individuals set fire to Jabir Hotel in the Chittarmore area and vandalized its furniture.

In addition to the hotel fire, vandals targeted the district Awami League office and the residences of three other Awami League leaders in the Sharsha and Benapole areas. The coordinated attacks have raised concerns about the security situation in Jessore, prompting authorities to call for calm and restraint.
