Erdoğan urges EU to immediately revive Türkiye’s accession talks

22 July 2025 15:04

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called on the European Union not to delay even a single day in reviving and advancing Türkiye's accession negotiations.

He emphasised the need for a clear and proactive approach from the EU, Caliber.Az reports per Turkish media.

“We expect them to understand that it is not possible to advance relations with the ambivalent attitude we have seen so many times before," he said.

"Considering the events in Europe and its surroundings, as well as the differences of opinion within the EU, it will become clear that the union needs a dynamic and solution-oriented member such as Türkiye.”

Erdoğan reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to joining the bloc, stating, “As Türkiye, we are ready for full membership.”

He also suggested that the EU could benefit from a shift in perspective, adding, “Breaking free from outdated, obsessive political views could be a move that embraces a new era for the European Union.”

Türkiye’s bid for European Union membership has long been a complex and sensitive issue, shaped by decades of political, economic, and cultural factors. Despite being a candidate country since 1999, accession talks have stalled multiple times amid concerns over democratic reforms, human rights, and geopolitical tensions.

Turkish leaders have frequently criticised what they perceive as the EU’s inconsistent and ambivalent stance towards Türkiye’s candidacy. Meanwhile, Türkiye continues to play a strategic role as a bridge between Europe and Asia, hosting millions of refugees and contributing to regional stability.

In recent years, Ankara has called for a revitalisation of accession negotiations, arguing that Türkiye’s dynamic economy and geopolitical significance make it a valuable future member.
