Estonia FM says president’s Russia remarks contradict official policy
Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has criticised remarks by Alar Karis regarding the possibility of future dialogue with Russia, saying they contradict the official foreign policy positions of both Estonia and the European Union.
According to Estonia’s public broadcaster ERR, the dispute follows comments by President Karis suggesting that Europe should begin considering potential scenarios for engagement with Russia after the war in Ukraine ends. Karis noted that the conflict could conclude unexpectedly and quickly, making it necessary to prepare for post-war relations.
In response, Tsahkna warned that such statements could weaken the West’s position and provide Moscow with additional leverage in future negotiations.
He said the president’s approach “contradicts European and Estonian foreign policy” and could strengthen the negotiating position of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“Regarding the idea that after February 2022 a ceasefire should have been reached, I would remind Alar Karis that at that time Putin put forward ultimatums concerning Ukraine’s sovereignty and territory, as well as our own guarantees of freedom and security within NATO,” Tsahkna said.
