ET: Russia could reemerge as key player India's energy security Amid Hormuz Strait risks
The Indian government is considering increasing oil purchases from Russia in the event of a fuel shortage, The Economic Times (ET) reports, citing sources.
Due to the conflict in the Middle East, risks have emerged for the delivery routes of hydrocarbon supplies to India from Gulf countries via the Strait of Hormuz. This has positioned Russia as a potentially central player for India’s energy security.
According to officials, additional shipments of Russian oil are already ready for import and could be redirected to India.
On August 6, 2025, the United States imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods due to its purchases of Russian oil. On February 7, President Donald Trump lifted the additional tariffs in exchange for India agreeing to refrain from buying Russian oil. According to ET sources, Russia remained India’s “largest oil supplier” in February.
On February 28, 2026, Israel and the United States struck Iran. In response, Tehran attacked American bases in the Persian Gulf and blocked the Strait of Hormuz, causing a sharp rise in oil prices.
