EU ambassador warns relations with Georgia at historic low
Relations between Georgia and the European Union are currently at their lowest point in history, primarily due to actions taken by the Georgian authorities, Pavel Gerchinsky, the EU Ambassador to Georgia said.
“The process of Georgia's integration into the EU has stalled, and EU leaders have clearly indicated that this is a direct result of the actions of the Georgian government,” Gerchinsky noted, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
He urged Georgian citizens to participate in the upcoming parliamentary elections on October 26, saying, “Please come out, vote, and choose a government that reflects your desires and aspirations.”
The ambassador also expressed pride and happiness regarding the October 20 opposition march in Tbilisi, where thousands of participants carried EU flags.
Relations between the EU, the US, and Georgia have significantly deteriorated since the Georgian parliament adopted a law on foreign agents in May.
On July 5, the US Department of Defence announced the indefinite postponement of the planned “Worthy Partner” military exercises with Georgia, which were set for the summer. The Pentagon cited a revision of strategic relations as the reason for this decision, noting that Georgian authorities claimed the West, including Washington, was attempting to exert additional pressure on Russia amid the Ukraine situation. The US has rejected these claims as false. Additionally, the EU has frozen €30 million that were intended for the Georgian Ministry of Defence.
