EU, Armenia to discuss visa liberalisation action plan shortly
The draft version of the EU-Armenia Visa Liberalisation Action Plan (VLAP) is set to be discussed on June 24, EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner announced following a meeting in Brussels with Armenian Internal Minister Arpine Sargsyan.
During the meeting, both officials underscored the importance of taking concrete steps in the visa liberalisation process. Minister Sargsyan presented recent reforms underway in Armenia and reaffirmed her country’s readiness to make efforts toward fulfilling the VLAP requirements. She also extended an invitation to Commissioner Brunner to visit Armenia in 2025 to coordinate more closely and witness the reforms firsthand, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The move follows a September 2024 statement by EU Ambassador to Armenia, Vassilis Maragos, who expressed confidence that the visa liberalisation process could be finalised with joint commitment. While acknowledging that Armenia still needs to address certain technical aspects—such as improving document security and ensuring safe travel procedures—Maragos highlighted ongoing collaboration between EU and Armenian technical teams.
The visa liberalisation dialogue was officially launched at the political level in July 2024.
In September 2024, the EU and Armenia discussed the beginning of dialogue on visa liberalisation for Armenia at the political level.
