EU braces for potential nuclear incident
The European Commission is actively preparing for the possibility of a nuclear incident at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, a situation that has garnered significant attention due to the ongoing conflict in the region.
European Commission spokesman Tim McPhee addressed the issue during a press briefing in Brussels, where he outlined the steps being taken to ensure the safety and awareness of European Union citizens, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
According to McPhee, the European Commission is in continuous communication with EU member states and relevant international agencies to closely monitor the situation at the Zaporizhzhya plant.
The Commission’s primary focus is on ensuring that any developments are swiftly communicated to the public, particularly in the event of a nuclear incident. McPhee emphasized the importance of timely warnings, which would be issued to inform EU citizens, especially those in neighbouring countries, of any potential risks.
While expressing a strong hope that a nuclear incident will not occur, McPhee urged against speculation on the matter. He stressed that the European Commission's preparations are precautionary and part of a broader effort to remain vigilant in the face of potential dangers.
When asked about the ongoing Ukrainian shelling near the Zaporizhzhya plant, McPhee declined to provide specific comments, stating that such actions are part of the broader conflict. He also refrained from discussing reports of Ukrainian military movements toward the Kursk nuclear power plant in Russia, maintaining the European Commission's stance of not speculating on these sensitive issues.
