EU expands presence in Armenia with new mission to counter hybrid threats
The European Union is set to establish a new mission in Armenia aimed at strengthening the country’s resilience against hybrid threats, following approval by EU foreign ministers.
The initiative is designed to assist Yerevan in addressing challenges such as foreign interference in electoral processes, cyberattacks, and illicit political financing, Caliber.Az repprts, citing Armenian media.
The new mission is expected to begin operations in the coming months and will be granted a two-year mandate. It will be officially named the “European Union Partnership Mission in the Republic of Armenia” (EUPM Armenia).
The move comes as the EU already maintains a separate presence in the country. The European Union Mission in Armenia (EUMA), an intelligence and monitoring mission, has been operational since February 20, 2023.
On January 30, 2025, the Council of the European Union extended EUMA’s mandate for an additional two years, until February 19, 2027, underscoring the bloc’s continued engagement in the region.
