EU to continue backing Armenian government programs – von der Leyen

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the European Union would continue supporting the implementation of programs promoted by the Armenian government following her meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.

During the meeting, Pashinyan emphasised the importance of EU assistance in diversifying Armenia’s economy and advancing democratic reforms. Von der Leyen, in turn, confirmed Brussels’ readiness to develop bilateral cooperation across various areas, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Armenian government’s press service.

In March last year, Armenia’s parliament adopted the Law “On Launching Accession Process of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union,” while the sides signed a strategic partnership agenda in December 2025. In early September, the EU Council approved the European Commission’s initiative to liberalise trade with Armenia for two years.

Moscow had demanded that Yerevan put the issue of joining the European Union to a referendum, but Armenian authorities described the proposal as premature.
