EU welcomes Armenia–Türkiye railway talks as step toward regional connectivity
The European Union has welcomed a recent meeting between Armenian and Turkish officials on restoring the Kars–Gyumri railway line, describing it as a positive step toward regional cooperation and stability.
The EU said that discussions held in Kars by the Armenian-Turkish Joint Working Group reflected steady progress in the normalisation of relations between Armenia and Türkiye. The bloc noted that such developments contribute to broader positive dynamics in the region and are important for achieving long-term peace and stability, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The EU reiterated its support for the full normalisation of ties between Yerevan and Ankara and emphasised that reopening the Kars–Gyumri railway would enhance regional connectivity. According to the statement, improved transport links are expected to deliver tangible economic benefits for countries across the South Caucasus.
Brussels also reaffirmed its commitment to advancing transport and economic links in the region through initiatives such as the Global Gateway strategy and the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor, both of which envision a greater role for Armenia and Türkiye.
The meeting of the Armenian-Turkish Joint Working Group took place on April 28 as part of ongoing efforts to normalise relations between the two countries.
