Europe set to assume greater leadership roles in NATO commands
NATO is planning a significant redistribution of command positions. Under the proposed changes, European countries will assume greater responsibilities in both financing and operational leadership.
BILD reports that the most senior military position, the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), will remain in American hands, with the United States continuing to occupy this key post.
The redistribution of command posts will include the following adjustments:
The United Kingdom will take over Joint Force Command Norfolk in Virginia, United States.
Italy will assume command of Joint Force Command Naples.
Germany and Poland will jointly lead Joint Force Command Brunssum in the Netherlands on a rotational basis.
These changes mean that all three Joint Force Commands, which oversee NATO operations at the operational level, will be under European leadership, while still remaining under the strategic authority of SACEUR.
Meanwhile, the United States will additionally assume command of NATO’s Maritime Command in Northwood (United Kingdom), while control of NATO’s Land Forces in Türkiye and Air Command in Ramstein (Germany) will continue to be held by the US.
