European Parliament signals support for Armenia’s EU membership ambitions

The European Parliament is prepared to support Armenia in its journey toward European Union membership.

The statement was made by Vice-President of the European Parliament, Younous Omarjee, during the 12th Plenary Session of the EuroNest Parliamentary Assembly in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.  

According to Omarjee, Armenia’s recent decisions demonstrate the country’s clear choice to align itself with the European family.

"Armenia’s decisions, particularly the most recent ones, are extremely important. The country has adopted a historic law, sending a clear and powerful signal that it sees its future in Europe. This is not merely a symbolic gesture, but a strategic choice—to join the family of European democracies. The European Parliament is ready to support Armenia on this historic path if it decides to formally submit its EU membership application," Omarjee said.

He emphasised that Armenia’s European direction aligns with the practical cooperation already established between the EU and Armenia.

"Behind the political statements lies real, tangible partnership, especially in the economic and investment spheres of the Eastern Partnership. We are working together to create new jobs, modern infrastructure, and opportunities for young Armenians. As the European Union and Armenia move forward together, they can build a more prosperous and just future for all," Omarjee added.

In March 2025, the Armenian Parliament passed a law initiating the process of EU accession.

"We are pleased to see our society taking an active stance on European integration," Armenian National Assembly Speaker Alen Simonyan said. He noted that both the United States and the EU have made significant contributions to the development of democracy in Armenia, as the country has confidently chosen the democratic path and intends to follow it unwaveringly.

Euronest Parliamentary Assembly is an annual inter-parliamentary forum that brings together members of the European Parliament and the parliaments of Eastern Partnership countries to promote political dialogue, cooperation, and integration between the European Union (EU) and its Eastern neighbours.
