Europeans to flock to Türkiye due to gas supply challenges

04 September 2022 17:00

At least a million residents of the European Union due to problems with gas supply intend to spend the coming winter in Türkiye.

The statement came from Advisor to the Turkish President, a member of the Presidential Council for Economic Policy, Yigit Bulut on September 4, TASS reports.

“At least one million EU citizens who are facing gas cut-off in gas supplies are set to spend this winter in Türkiye. Hotels in Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya and many other provinces will be full, the Europeans have already begun to act in terms of purchasing and renting housing,” Bulut said.

“Don't sell too cheap,” Bulut advised, addressing his words to landlords, and called the situation with the gas shutdown in Europe “divine justice”.

Matilda Versdorfer, Deputy Head of the Directorate General of the European Commission for Energy, said on September 1 that 13 EU countries have stopped receiving Russian gas or are receiving it in a limited amount after the suspension of supplies via Nord Stream. She acknowledged that the EU's energy crisis cannot be overcome by efforts to diversify supplies alone, and called on all EU countries to continue their efforts to reduce gas consumption.
