Ex-envoy hails US efforts in regional stabilisation VIDEO
Former US Ambassador to Azerbaijan Robert Cekuta has said that it is particularly positive that the US government has begun to take a more active role in all events in the region.
He made the remarks in an interview with Deputy Chairman of the Russian Community of Azerbaijan, journalist and political scientist Anastasia Lavrina, Caliber.Az reports.
"The events of last week have changed the situation to some extent. In the US, there is talk both about Azerbaijan's return of its territory and the future of ethnic Armenians. The behaviour of Armenians can be explained by the fact that they have been told all sorts of tall tales about Azerbaijanis for decades,” Lavrina said.
“A new chapter has begun for Azerbaijan, a transition to a new era and a desire to build strong relations with its neighbours. For many years, the rights of Armenians living in Karabakh have been the focus of the press. Is this fair? Let's leave it to the conscience of others. I would like to say that, as the US Ambassador, I focused on three main points - sovereignty, territorial integrity and the rights of the people. This position was then supported by the United States.”
“A key aspect of US policy in the region is an attempt to find a balance between these three points. In my opinion, Azerbaijanis and Armenians will be able to live peacefully in the region. The most important thing now is to defeat fear", Cekuta emphasized.
