Finland launches new support programme for Ukraine, allocates €660 million for arms purchases

27 February 2025 13:11

The Finnish Ministry of Defence has announced a new initiative to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, committing €660 million for the purchase of weapons from local defence companies.

The programme, which has been in development since last autumn, aims to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities by sourcing advanced defence equipment from Finland’s domestic industry, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Finnish Ministry of Defence.

According to the ministry, local companies and their expertise will play a central role in providing the necessary military equipment. The ministry has been actively collaborating with Finnish businesses, as well as international partners, including Ukraine, to ensure the successful implementation of the support programme.

This move is part of Finland's broader effort to assist Ukraine in its defence against Russian aggression. The programme also highlights Finland’s growing involvement in international defence cooperation, particularly within the context of the European Union and NATO-aligned nations.

In related developments, Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Stenegard announced on February 23 that Sweden will send air defence systems to Ukraine, valued at approximately $113 million. Sweden, along with Finland, has been a strong supporter of Ukraine, particularly in terms of providing military aid and diplomatic backing.

On February 18, both Sweden and Finland convened emergency parliamentary sessions to discuss potential solutions to the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine. Stenegard emphasised the importance of unity in supporting Ukraine, urging the international community to remain steadfast in its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Meanwhile, American media outlets have reported on ongoing discussions surrounding the potential exclusion of Finland and Sweden from NATO, in response to pressure from Russia. Despite these challenges, both countries continue to affirm their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s efforts in its war against Russian aggression.
