Trump's national security strategy draws criticism for limited focus on space

18 December 2025 02:18

The Trump administration’s latest national security strategy is facing criticism for giving little attention to space, despite growing warnings that it has become a key arena for modern warfare, according to SpaceNews.

In the 29-page document, space is mentioned only once, and then only briefly, as part of a list of technology sectors requiring research investment. Critics say this falls far short of the strategic importance now attached to space by military planners in the US and its allies.

Senior defence officials, including leaders at US Space Command, have repeatedly argued that the country must develop both defensive and offensive capabilities in orbit to counter emerging threats. Other powers, particularly China, have already been testing and deploying space-based military technologies.

By contrast, former President Joe Biden’s most recent national security strategy referred to space repeatedly, reflecting its growing role in defence planning. NATO also formally recognised space as an operational domain in 2019 and has since worked to strengthen its capabilities.

The US Space Force, created during Donald Trump’s first term, continues to receive rising budgets, but analysts say it now lacks a clear strategic direction. They argue this suggests space security is not a priority in Trump’s second administration.

The strategy’s critics also point to broader policy choices, saying cultural and ideological issues have taken precedence over military readiness. They highlight proposals such as restricting military service by transgender people at a time of recruitment shortages.

Even Trump’s flagship missile defence proposal, known as the “Golden Dome”, has been described as underfunded and lacking transparency, raising doubts about its feasibility.

Analysts warn that without sustained focus and investment, the US risks falling behind rivals who see space as central to future conflicts.
