Firefighters battle major landfill blaze in Astana for third consecutive day
Efforts to extinguish a fire at a municipal solid waste landfill in Astana’s Baikonur district, Kazakhstan, have entered their third consecutive day, with emergency crews continuing operations around the clock.
The blaze broke out during the night of July 10, 2026, and firefighting efforts remain ongoing.
According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations, two operational sectors have been established to improve the effectiveness of the response, concentrating the main personnel and equipment in the affected area.
“At the same time, engineering work is being carried out to cover the entire landfill with inert material in order to contain the fire hotspots and prevent further spread of the blaze. To date, approximately 14,850 tonnes of inert material have been delivered to the site,” the ministry said.
