Five hurt after blast rips through church in Boonville, New York
A powerful explosion tore through a church in upstate New York on the morning of February 17, injuring five people — including the pastor and several firefighters — after emergency crews responded to reports of a gas odour inside the building, authorities said.
The blast occurred at about 10:30 a.m. at Abundant Life Church in the village of Boonville, roughly 50 miles northeast of Syracuse, according to US media.
Investigators from New York State Police said thick black smoke rose over the area following the explosion. Preliminary information indicates the church was heated using propane cylinders.
Firefighters had been dispatched after a gas smell was reported at the building. According to early findings, four people were in the basement when the furnace activated, triggering the explosion. A firefighter positioned on the first floor, attempting to ventilate the structure, was thrown into a wall by the force of the blast.
Pastor Brandon Pitts, 43, along with four members of the Boonville Fire Department, aged between 43 and 71, were transported to nearby hospitals. Police said all five victims were in critical but stable condition.
In a written statement, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente expressed support for those injured, saying, “Our thoughts are especially with the Boonville firefighters and church members who were injured. I commend the bravery and professionalism of our first responders who rushed toward danger to protect others.”
Authorities said there was no early evidence suggesting criminal involvement in the incident. The explosion caused catastrophic damage to the church building.
