Five killed as torrential rains and snowstorms lash large parts of Iran
Severe weather has swept across Iran, bringing intense snowfall and heavy rainfall that have caused fatalities and widespread disruption.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the extreme weather has affected 24 provinces over a four-day period. Five people have been confirmed dead, while more than 18,000 residents have required assistance from emergency services.
As conditions worsened, authorities evacuated more than 1,500 people from affected areas. In the city of Jahrom, two children and a rescue worker lost their lives. Two additional bodies were later recovered in Fars Province. Due to hazardous weather conditions, schools and other educational institutions were temporarily closed in multiple regions.
The most severe situation has been reported in Hormozgan Province, where authorities declared the highest, red-level weather alert. On Qeshm Island, more than 170 millimetres of rain fell within a short time, leading to the breach of a dam and extensive flooding across surrounding areas.
Emergency and rescue services remain fully engaged, continuing efforts to mitigate the impact of the disaster. Teams are providing aid to affected communities, clearing debris, and restoring access to flooded zones. Temporary accommodation centres have also been established to house evacuees.
Iranian meteorologists warn that conditions may deteriorate further in the coming days. Forecasts indicate additional episodes of heavy rainfall in several regions, raising the risk of new floods and posing further challenges for rescue and recovery operations.
