FM: "Iran considers Armenia's security its own security"
Tehran considers the security of Armenia and the region to be its own security.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian made the remarks at the opening of Iran's Consulate-General in Gafan on October 21, Caliber.Az reports citing the Armenian media.
He expressed confidence that the consulate staff will enjoy the support of the Armenian and Iranian governments, the leadership of the region and the city, as well as the benevolent attitude of the local population.
"I would like to recall the readiness of the Iranian government to open the Armenian Consulate-General in Tabriz on the principle of reciprocity," Abdollahian said.
The decision to establish the Consulate General in Gafan, according to him, shows the importance with which the government and the people of Iran treat the "millennial" relations between Iran and the Armenian people.
"Iran considers the security of Armenia and the region to be its security," the minister said.
According to him, Iran's policy is to respect territorial integrity and internationally recognised borders.
He noted that together with the staff of the embassy in Yerevan and the consulate in Gafan, the Iranian authorities will work on the development of trade and economic ties between the two countries.
Syunik region (Zangazur – ed.), according to Abdollahian, is one of the most important sections of the North-South corridor. Iran considers Armenia one of the most important transit countries of the corridor.
"We will make every effort to ensure that transit, cargo and passenger transportation develop along this path," the minister said.
