Former Armenian Defence Minister released on bail Amid ongoing corruption investigation

16 August 2024 09:15

Former Armenian Defence Minister David Tonoyan has been released from the pre-trial detention facility after securing bail set at 15 million drams (approximately $37,500).

This development follows a lengthy detention period since September 2021, during which Tonoyan faced accusations related to abuse of power in ammunition procurement, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

cAccording to lawyer Albert Benglyan, Tonoyan's release comes as part of a broader investigation into a high-profile corruption case. The investigation alleges that Tonoyan, along with several other high-ranking officials and individuals, was involved in the procurement of substandard aircraft missiles and embezzlement amounting to $4.6 million.

The case also involves Artak Davtyan, former Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces; Stepan Galstyan, former Deputy Chief of General Staff; Avetik Muradyan, former commander of the aviation department of the Ministry of Defence; Artyom Hambaryan, head of the Aviation Technical Property Service of the Aviation Department; Vladimir Babayan, Chief Engineer of the Aviation Department; and David Galstyan, a businessman linked to arms deals.

The investigation continues as authorities pursue further details in the case, which has attracted significant attention due to its implications for the Armenian military's procurement practices and financial oversight.
