Freight train derails in Armenia PHOTO

A freight train operated by the South Caucasus Railway CJSC has derailed in Armenia’s Gegharkunik region.

The incident occurred on the Shorzha–Chambarak railway section, reportedly caused by a landslide, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

Preliminary information indicates that the train driver was unable to brake in time. No casualties have been reported.

South Caucasus Railway (SCR) — a subsidiary of Russian Railways — has managed Armenia’s railway network under a long‑term concession agreement since 2008.

Armenia’s active rail infrastructure covers roughly 782 km of 1,520 mm broad-gauge track, and is fully electrified at 3 kV DC.

Because of regional conflicts and ensuing trade blockades, almost all cross-border railway links (to Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Iran) were severed in the 1990s — leaving only the line toward Georgia open for international rail traffic.
