French president begins historic state visit to Monaco
On June 7, French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, arrived in Monaco for a historic state visit to the principality on the French Riviera.
Upon arrival, the couple was welcomed with traditional military honours by Monaco’s Prince Albert II and Princess Charlene in a formal ceremony at the Prince’s Palace, Caliber.Az reports, citing Western media.
In a statement on Facebook, Monaco praised its close relationship with France, highlighting the strong bond of friendship and the open border shared between the two states. The palace emphasised ongoing cooperation in areas such as health, security, culture, and education, with both Monaco and France committed to pursuing a more sustainable future.
According to the Prince’s Palace, over 40,000 French citizens cross daily into Monaco for work, underscoring the deep economic and social ties between the neighbouring states. Macron’s visit presents an important opportunity to discuss bilateral issues and matters of mutual interest.
This two-day visit marks the first official state visit to Monaco by a French president since François Mitterrand’s visit in 1984.
Macron’s trip also precedes the United Nations Ocean Conference scheduled to take place in nearby Nice on June 10. The conference will gather global leaders, with Macron expected to participate as the European Union prepares to formally launch the “European Ocean Pact.”
