French president names Uzbekistan as Europe’s uranium alternative

French President Emmanuel Macron has underscored Europe’s reliance on Russian uranium and identified Uzbekistan as a strategic alternative supplier.

Speaking on the importance of diversifying imports, Macron emphasized that such steps are crucial to reducing risks and bolstering the European Union’s energy security, Caliber.Az reports, citing Uzbek media.

Macron also highlighted Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Canada, and Australia among other uranium-producing nations.

Uzbekistan’s mention is notable given the country’s confirmed uranium reserves and its active development of export capabilities. In recent years, Uzbekistan has strengthened partnerships with international companies and is increasingly seen as a promising energy partner for Europe. For the EU, sourcing uranium from Uzbekistan could help reduce dependence on Russia while reinforcing energy sovereignty.

Macron stressed that nuclear energy remains “the key” to national independence and sovereignty, as well as a driver of decarbonization and economic growth. He added that a meeting of France’s nuclear policy council is scheduled in the coming days, where new measures will be decided based on the national energy program.

By highlighting Uzbekistan among alternative uranium suppliers, Macron’s remarks signal new opportunities for the country to expand its presence in the global market and deepen cooperation with the EU.
