French president vows unwavering military support to Armenia During the Paris talks with Pashinyan/VIDEO

22 February 2024 10:25

French President Emmanuel Macron has said that France will continue cooperation with Armenia in the defence sphere.

Macron made the remarks at a briefing with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in Paris, Caliber.Az reports, citing Sputnik Armenia.

The French leader recalled that Paris had agreed to supply defence weapons to Armenia.

Meanwhile, Macron published a message in Armenian language on his Facebook page, reaffirming France's support for Armenia.

"On this day, when France honours Misak and Meline Manoucheyan, acknowledges the contribution of Armenians to the French nation, to the spirit of the Resistance, to the struggle for freedom, your presence is important to us. I tell you once again of France's support," Macron wrote.

For his part, addressing the briefing, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said that Armenia and France established new relations in the defence sphere, which is significant for ensuring security and stability in the South Caucasus.

"There is criticism on this issue, but we want to note that Armenia recognises the territorial integrity of all its neighbours and the development of our country's defence capabilities cannot be a cause for alarm. Our only task is to build the right balance in the region," Pashinyan said.

He added that "Armenia's goal is to protect the legitimate and internationally recognised borders, territory, territorial integrity and independence of the country, as well as to increase resilience".

Pashinyan went on to say that ties between Armenian and France are deepening economically and politically, and underlined Macron's contribution in creating a favourable environment around Armenia.

The Armenian prime minister and French president will attend the burial ceremony of the remains of Armenian National Hero of the Resistance Movement Misak Manushyan at the Pantheon of the Greatest Figures of France, along with Anna Hakobyan and Brigitte Macron.

According to Pashinyan, today's event also shows the depth of existing relations between the two countries and peoples. "After all, they are not only political, economic, human and cultural, but I think we are connected by deep emotional ties," Pashiyanna said, thanking Macron for this important initiative.

“With your permission, I must also emphasize that this year we will have an event that has a very deep context. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Charles Aznavour, and I hope that in September we will take part together in a gala concert dedicated to the 100th anniversary of Aznavour in Yerevan, and I would like, Mr. President, to invite you to visit Armenia on a state visit,” he said, noting that bilateral relations are at a particularly dynamic stage in which Macron's role is special.

According to the press service of the Armenian government, Pashinyan discussed the situation in the South Caucasus with French Senate President Gerard Larcher.

During the meeting, the sides discussed several issues related to the ongoing processes in the South Caucasus, the actions of the Government of the Republic of Armenia to solve humanitarian problems of the displaced people from Karabakh, "Crossroads of Peace" project, the Armenian-French inter-parliamentary cooperation.
