Garbage landslide in Philippines kills at least eleven
A massive garbage landslide struck a landfill in Cebu City, Philippines, claiming at least eleven lives, with more than 20 people reported missing.
Cebu Mayor Nestor Archival said operations continue as rescue teams work into a second day, though chances of finding survivors are dwindling, Caliber.Az reports per British media.
Most of the victims were landfill workers, and nearby makeshift homes were also affected. One survivor, 31-year-old office worker Jailord Antigua, escaped after being trapped in an administrative building when the waste mass collapsed.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the official cause of the incident, but preliminary assessments indicate the garbage landslide was likely triggered by prolonged heavy rainfall.
The saturated soil is thought to have weakened the multi-meter-high waste layers, causing them to collapse.
