Georgia blasts departing German envoy for "damaging" bilateral ties
German Ambassador to Georgia Peter Fischer, who openly supported the country's radical opposition and frequently criticized the Georgian government, has concluded his diplomatic mission in Tbilisi.
Fischer announced the end of his tenure in a post on his X account.
Reacting to the ambassador's departure, Irakli Kobakhidze said Germany and Georgia had traditionally shared strong bilateral ties.
"Traditionally, Germany and Georgia have had special relations, and Germany played a very significant role in our country's development in the early 1990s, for which we are grateful," Kobakhidze said.
The prime minister went on to criticize Fischer's tenure, saying: "For many years, Georgia and Germany enjoyed warm and constructive bilateral relations. Ambassador Fischer was the only envoy who not only failed to strengthen those ties but, on the contrary, did everything within his power to undermine them, inflicting considerable damage on the relationship—a deeply regrettable outcome."
The Georgian authorities have repeatedly accused Fischer of supporting what they describe as revolutionary processes in the country. Officials have also maintained that foreign ambassadors should refrain from interfering in the internal affairs of their host states.
