Georgia, China deepen strategic partnership, sign cooperation agreements

04 November 2025 20:45

Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Kobakhidze met with Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, during his visit to Shanghai, the Georgian Government Administration reported.

Kobakhidze expressed gratitude to Premier Li for the invitation to attend the opening of the China International Import Expo (CIIE), highlighting the “positive dynamics of the strategic partnership and bilateral relations” between Georgia and China, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

The meeting underscored the growing cooperation between the two countries in trade, economy, tourism, and technology, as well as collaboration within the Belt and Road Initiative and the development of the Middle Corridor.

“Relations between Georgia and China continue to develop steadily, based on the principles of mutual respect, equality and cooperation,” Kobakhidze stated, reaffirming Georgia’s support for the One China Principle and expressing appreciation for China’s “firm support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

The Prime Minister noted that China ranks among Georgia’s top four trading partners, with the Free Trade Agreement significantly boosting exports. He emphasized growing freight turnover through the Middle Corridor, which rose by 70.6% in January–August 2025 compared to the previous year, and highlighted Chinese investment in Georgia, which surged 229% to $7.43 million in the first half of 2025.

Premier Li Qiang praised Georgia’s participation in the CIIE, saying, “Georgia is taking part this year for the first time as a guest of honor… I am confident that Georgian companies will soon see tangible results from their participation.” He added, “China is grateful to Georgia for its sincere friendship. We wish to further strengthen strategic communication, expand practical cooperation, and bring even greater benefits to our peoples.”

Following the meeting, several memoranda of cooperation were signed in various fields by Georgian and Chinese officials, including economy, agriculture, and environmental protection.
