Georgia creates bravery order in honour of Ingushetia boy who died saving friend PHOTO

01 July 2026 14:04

Georgia has established a new state award, the Order of Caucasian Bravery, in memory of Khizir Derbichev, an eight-year-old boy from Ingushetia who died after attempting to save a friend from drowning.

The decision was announced in Georgia as part of a broader resolution introducing new honorary titles and state decorations, Caliber.Az reports.

According to local media reports, the award is intended to recognise acts of exceptional courage and self-sacrifice.

Friedon Indjiya, chairman of Georgia’s Council of Elders, said the honour was created to reflect values of solidarity and bravery across the Caucasus.

He said Khizir Derbichev’s actions had “spiritually united all the peoples of the Caucasus” and described the new order as a symbol of courage, altruism and mutual support.

Derbichev went missing on June 15 in the Sunzha River near Karabulak in Ingushetia. Authorities said the boy had entered the water in an attempt to rescue a friend. A large-scale search operation lasting nearly eight days involved emergency services, police officers and volunteers before the recovery effort concluded.
