Georgia evacuates Dariali border checkpoint after water-level alert

People were evacuated from the Dariali border checkpoint on the Georgia-Russia border after an early warning system in the Devdoraki Gorge was triggered, Georgia’s Interior Ministry said, as quoted by local media.

The system, installed in the riverbed, detected a minimal change in the water level and issued an alert, prompting the evacuation as a precaution. Similar protocols at the checkpoint provide for the evacuation of people to a safe location when the system detects changes in river flow.

Authorities also temporarily restricted the movement of all types of vehicles in both directions near the village of Gveleti as a safety measure.

The Dariali crossing links Georgia with Russia through the Caucasus and is located in the Devdoraki Valley.
