Georgia, Germany sign €1.3 million deal to develop green hydrogen technology

20 June 2023 16:52

The German government will allocate €1.3 million through the German Development Bank to support the introduction of green hydrogen technology in Georgia, the Georgian Ministry of Economy announced on June 20.

The Georgian Oil and Gas Corporation and the Bank signed the agreement as part of the intergovernmental negotiations on development between the two states, hosted in Berlin on June 19, according to Agenda.ge.

Georgian Deputy Economy Minister Romeo Mikautadze said the development was coming on the back of his Government’s involvement in the Green Hydrogen project as a member of the European Energy Union.

“We are not only studying the possibility of introducing [this] technological innovation in the country and being introduced to successful examples but also starting a pilot project. I would like to express my gratitude to the German Government, which is helping us develop the use of green hydrogen”, he said.

The Economy Ministry said preparatory work would determine technical and economic feasibility, design, environmental impact and related legislation for the implementation of the technology.

The Ministry also said the two countries had agreed to jointly develop both a green hydrogen pilot plant and its “full value chain”.
