Georgia hosts first trilateral political consultations with Armenia, Azerbaijan

17 April 2025 14:33

Georgia has launched the first round of trilateral political consultations at the deputy foreign minister level with Armenia and Azerbaijan in Tbilisi, the Georgian foreign ministry announced on April 17.

Tbilisi is currently hosting closed-door political consultations involving deputy foreign ministers from Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan — the first such meeting in a trilateral format, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

The discussions mark an attempt to deepen regional cooperation in the South Caucasus amid persistent geopolitical tensions.

According to a statement from Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the talks bring together Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia Lasha Darsalia, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Elnur Mammadov, and Armenia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan, along with members of their respective delegations.

The meeting opened with remarks from Maka Bochorishvili, the Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister and host of the event. Bochorishvili highlighted the strategic importance of the South Caucasus region and its untapped potential for collaboration.

“Today’s meeting reflects Tbilisi’s genuine commitment to fostering regional cooperation and seeking common ground among our nations. Our exchange of views and the exploration of trilateral cooperation opportunities are both timely and essential,” she said.

The stated aim of the consultations is to exchange perspectives and identify shared interests that could underpin a viable, mutually beneficial framework for cooperation between Baku, Tbilisi and Yerevan.

The Georgian side stressed that the new format does not conflict with any existing initiatives, nor is it intended to replace them, but instead serves as a complementary effort to encourage constructive dialogue.

Before the trilateral meeting, Bochorishvili held bilateral talks with the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov, and Armenia, Ararat Mirzoyan, during which the idea for the three-way consultations was originally proposed.
