Georgia, Kazakhstan elevate ties to strategic partnership

29 June 2026 20:09

Georgia and Kazakhstan have officially elevated their bilateral relations to the level of a strategic partnership, following the signing of a Joint Declaration by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.

The announcement was made during expanded-format talks between the two leaders, the Georgian Government Administration said.

"A Joint Declaration elevating relations between Georgia and Kazakhstan to the level of a strategic partnership was signed by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze and President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev," the administration said in a statement.

Kobakhidze described the move as a milestone in bilateral relations that would unlock new opportunities for cooperation across multiple sectors.

"The strategic partnership marks a major achievement in our bilateral relations. I am confident that this step will create new opportunities for expanding cooperation between our countries. We also look forward to the next meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission in Georgia, which will provide additional momentum to trade and investment ties," he said.

The Georgian prime minister also thanked Kazakhstan for its continued support of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity, highlighting the important role of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.

Tokayev, in turn, described the signing of the declaration as a historic step that serves the interests of both nations.

"Today we will sign a joint declaration that will elevate our relations to the level of a strategic partnership. This is truly a historic decision that creates a solid foundation for further expanding our cooperation," the Kazakh president said.

Tokayev also praised Georgia's recent achievements, noting that the country has successfully navigated complex challenges, strengthened its democratic institutions, maintained economic growth, and reinforced its position on the international stage.

"We regard Georgia as a dynamic, forward-looking country, and we sincerely wish it every success in achieving its national goals," Tokayev concluded.
