Georgia launches major anti-narcotics operation, arrests 42 suspects across country
In a sweeping anti-narcotics crackdown, Georgia’s Interior Ministry has arrested 42 individuals across the country within a 24-hour period, targeting what authorities describe as a well-organized drug distribution network.
The operation, carried out in both the capital Tbilisi and several regional areas, marks one of the most extensive drug enforcement actions in recent years, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
According to the Interior Ministry, the majority of those apprehended are believed to be high-level narcotics traffickers. Others face charges related to the unlawful acquisition and possession of large quantities of illicit substances. The suspects include both Georgian nationals and foreign citizens.
The arrests follow an intensive period of surveillance and undercover operations, which were authorized by judicial order. Investigators gathered audio and video evidence that allegedly confirms the detainees' involvement in the distribution and sale of narcotics. Authorities report that the suspects used encrypted online platforms to coordinate the concealment of drugs in predetermined locations. Information about these locations was then shared with buyers through secure communication channels.
"The suspects employed various methods of distribution, indicating a sophisticated and decentralized operation," the ministry noted in a statement.
During the raids, law enforcement agents seized a significant quantity of narcotics, including heroin, cocaine, alpha‑PVP, buprenorphine, Suboxone, methadone, ketamine, mephedrone, MDMA, marijuana, and several other synthetic drugs. Officials say the seized substances were intended for sale on the illicit market, and describe the haul as “exceptionally large.”
If found guilty, the accused individuals face severe penalties under Georgian law, with potential prison sentences of up to 20 years or even life imprisonment in aggravated cases.
