Georgia launches national mandatory military service with new draft system
As of January 1, 2025, Georgia will introduce new regulations for mandatory military service.
The draft will now exclusively apply to what will be known as the "National Mandatory Military Service."
According to Caliber.Az, referencing Georgian media, the draft will be conducted through a random selection process from a pool of individuals aged 18 to 27 who are registered for military service.
The selection process will take place by January 31.
The military service will be paid and will include both vacation and rest days. Draftees will be able to choose from three options: serving in a combat unit for six months, serving in security and support units for eight months, or serving to earn a junior commander rank and gain specialized skills for 11 months.
The draft will unfold throughout the year in phases. Combat unit service will begin on April 15, while the draft for security and support units will be carried out in four stages: March 15, June 1, August 15, and November 1.
The draft for junior commander roles and specialized positions will begin on October 15.
