Georgia moves to digital conscription with SMS summons
Georgia is preparing to introduce a new system for notifying citizens about compulsory military service, allowing draft notices to be delivered via SMS and email in addition to traditional methods.
According to reports cited by Caliber.Az from Georgian media, the proposed changes have already been submitted to parliament as amendments to the country’s Defence Code.
Under the new rules, conscripts may receive official notifications electronically. Once a message is sent, the draft notice will also be automatically published on the website of the Defence Forces and will be considered legally delivered.
Recipients of such notices will be required to report to the relevant authority within 10 days of issuance.
The planned system is part of a broader conscription process for 2026, during which authorities intend to call up approximately 5,800 individuals between the ages of 18 and 27. Selection will be conducted through a computerised system using a random selection method.
