Georgia provides new apartments to 1,600 displaced families in Tbilisi

19 September 2026 14:51

A total of 1,600 internally displaced families in Tbilisi have received new apartments under a Georgian government housing program, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said.

The project cost 280 million lari, or more than $107 million, according to Kobakhidze.

He said that, at the same time, four apartment buildings for 800 families were being constructed in Rustavi. In Zugdidi, more than 1,700 families are set to receive apartments in seven new buildings, while another 150 families in Borjomi will be provided with housing.

“In total, since 2012, more than 45,000 families have received new, well-equipped apartments into their ownership under various state programs. We know that you have gone through a very difficult journey and waited many years for a decent home. I would like to congratulate you on this very important day and wish you peace and prosperity,” Kobakhidze said.

Georgia has a long-standing internally displaced population stemming primarily from the conflicts in Abkhazia and South Ossetia in the 1990s and the 2008 Russia-Georgia war. UNHCR reported that more than 300,000 internally displaced people were registered in Georgia in 2025, while earlier UNHCR estimates put the number of people displaced by the conflicts since the 1990s at more than 257,000.
