Georgia reaffirms national interest first amid EU tensions

22 May 2026 13:12

Speaker of the Georgian Parliament Shalva Papuashvili has said that external forces must recognize the existence of a national government in Georgia that acts in the interests of the state.

“The experience of recent years has taught us one thing — our only measure is the national interests of our country. This is how we speak with the United States, the European Union, and all countries,” Papuashvili told a briefing, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

“We have repeatedly said that our main national task is the development of the country, therefore we are ready to take any step that serves this goal, and we will certainly not take any step that contradicts it, for example, escalation with Russia, which the EU has been pushing for in recent years,” the speaker noted.

He added that until external forces are able to “install a puppet government,” Georgia’s policy will remain focused on national interests.
