Georgia rejects opposition bid to cancel protest fines
16 April 2026 09:26
Parliament in Georgia has rejected an opposition initiative to grant amnesty to thousands of individuals fined during protest actions.
The proposal put forward by the opposition party For Georgia failed to pass after receiving 12 votes in favour and 12 against, leaving the draft law without the required support, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
The initiative sought to annul around 8,000 fines — both paid and unpaid — issued before March 1, 2026. These penalties were imposed on citizens for repeatedly blocking roads during demonstrations.
Opposition representatives argued that many of those fined are unable to pay the penalties, which amount to 5,000 lari (approximately $1,850) per violation.
