Georgia’s deputy PM quits politics, says he needs break

Georgian Deputy Prime Minister Mamuka Mdinaradze has announced his resignation and departure from politics, saying he plans to take a break and focus on his personal life.

“I think I deserve a break and the opportunity to take care of my family and myself,” Mdinaradze told a briefing.

He dismissed speculation that his decision was linked to a recent letter from former Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and said he would most likely pursue a career in business.

“I will return to politics only if the team really needs me and there is no other option,” Mdinaradze added.

His announcement comes days after Garibashvili, a former prime minister who has been convicted, accused Mdinaradze of pressuring him to admit guilt in connection with a new corruption case.

Mdinaradze has served as Georgia’s State Minister for Coordination of Law Enforcement Bodies since April 2026. He previously headed the country’s State Security Service from September 2025.

A prominent figure in the ruling Georgian Dream party, Mdinaradze has been a member of parliament since 2016. During his political career, he served as parliamentary majority leader, the party’s executive secretary and deputy speaker of parliament.
