Georgia’s new Azerbaijan ambassador to begin work in October

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze met with Giorgi Zakarashvili, the country’s newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, as the diplomat prepares to take up his post next month.

Kobakhidze congratulated Zakarashvili on his appointment and wished him success in his new role, according to the Georgian government, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.

The meeting highlighted the importance of the ambassador’s work in further strengthening the strategic partnership between Georgia and Azerbaijan.

Zakarashvili will officially begin serving as Georgia’s ambassador to Azerbaijan on October 1.

He has extensive diplomatic experience, including senior positions at Georgia’s Foreign Ministry and its diplomatic missions abroad.

Since 2021, Zakarashvili has served as Georgia’s ambassador to Ukraine and as the country’s permanent representative to GUAM, the regional organisation comprising Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Moldova.

From 2016 to 2019, he served as Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Georgian Interests Section at the Embassy of Switzerland in Russia.

Earlier, between 2012 and 2016, he was Envoy Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary at the Georgian Embassy in Ukraine and Permanent Representation to GUAM.

Zakarashvili holds the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.
