Georgia's new president reaffirms commitment to EU membership

30 December 2024 13:01

The new President of Georgia, Mikheil Kavelashvili, has announced that Tbilisi is striving to become a full member of the European Union (EU), as this is the historical choice of the people. His statement was reported by Interfax.

The head of state emphasized that speculations on this issue are often made both within the country and internationally, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

"Unfortunately, such speculations serve to polarize our society, so it is our duty to counter these speculations with the truth, which is that Georgia has never deviated from its course towards European integration," Kavelashvili said.

He also expressed his intention to strengthen relations with the United States. The president expressed hope that under the administration of Donald Trump, "strategic relations between the two countries will be restored."

Note that, on December 14, Mikheil Kavelashvili, nominee of the ruling Georgian Dream-Democratic Georgia party, has been elected as the sixth president of Georgia. The results, confirmed by the Central Election Commission (CEC), showed that Kavelashvili secured a two-thirds majority with 224 out of 300 electors casting their votes in his favour.

This election marked the first time Georgia’s president was selected by a collegiate electoral body, rather than through direct public vote. CEC Chair Giorgi Kalandarishvili officially validated the outcome, with one ballot deemed invalid.
