Georgia’s opposition party ban case heads toward January ruling

Georgia’s ruling authorities expect the Constitutional Court to consider an expanded lawsuit seeking to ban several opposition parties and potentially issue a ruling by January, lawmaker Levan Makashvili said.

“Our desire is for the Constitutional Court to make a decision in January, because the lawsuit is not changing radically; only one specific party is being added. We hope that the court will not need additional time to consider this issue,” Makashvili said.

The updated lawsuit includes the Gakharia for Georgia party, led by former Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia. Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili said on September 21 that the revised lawsuit had been signed and would be submitted to the Constitutional Court.
